Fast Food MASKots -
Friends or Foes?

Strategic Marketing Tools like 'Ronald McDonald, Wendy, Burger King, The Great Root Bear Mascots etc., were all Created to Enhance Brand Identity and Recognition, and most importantly to Cultivate Customer Loyalty and Emotional Connection with Consumers - Especially Children!

However, the Dark Reality behind these Fun and Friendly-Faced MASKots lies in their Contribution to Affordable Unhealthy Food and Unhealthy Eating Habits, as well as, Environmental Damage. 

These MASKed MASKots Promote Highly Processed, Calorie-Dense Foods that Contribute to Obesity, Diabetes, and other Health Issues, Particularly among Children. 

Additionally, the Fast-Food Industry’s Heavy Reliance on Chemicals, Additives, Antibiotics and GMO's in the Inhuman Factory Farming of Animals, as well as, their Excessive Packaging, leads to Significant Environmental Harm, including Deforestation, Green House Gas Emissions, and Plastic Pollution.

By MASKing these Impacts with a Cheerful Facade, MASKots Divert Attention from the Serious Consequences of the Fast Food Industry's Practices on both Public Health and our Planet.

Most People would think that French Fries are Vegan because they are made from Potatoes. You would think this to be true, however, we can no longer take this at Face Value. 

We must Investigate further by Asking What are the Ingredients? 
What Oil is it Fried in? 
Are there any Animal Additives or Flavours?

Is there any Dairy Products added? 
Is there Wheat or Gluten in these Fries? 
What percentage of the Fries are made from Potatoes?

You would think all of it, however almost all Fast Food Fries are only 85% Potato and 15% Vegetable Oil.

We must start Questioning FAST FOOD ingredients!

These Highly Processed Foods have many 'Hidden' Additives, Oils, Salts, Preservatives, GMO's etc that are Intentionally added to FAST FOOD to Increase Desire, Enhance Flavour, Texture and Increase Shelf-Life.   

They also add Fillers to many of their Products such as Soy Protein Isolate, Modified Food Starches, High-Fructose Corn Syrup, just to name a few!  

One of the 'Processes' that 'MacDonald's' Fries goes through, is to Partially Fry them in a Blend of Oils (Canola, Corn & Soybean and Hydrogenated Soybean Oil - all GMO Oils), after they are Blanched, and before they are Frozen and Shipped to the Restaurants.

So when Fries are ordered, they are again Fried in a Blend of these same Oils.  Did you get that - Fries are Fried Twice!

Here are the Ingredients (GMO) in MacDonald's French Fries:

Potatoes
Canola Oil 
Corn Oil
Soybean Oil
Hydrogenated Soybean Oil
Natural Beef Flavor (derived from wheat and milk)
Dextrose
Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate (to maintain color)
Salt
Citric Acid (as a preservative)
Dimethylpolysiloxane (as an anti-foaming agent)

Most FAST FOOD is NOT Organic and therefore loaded with Chemicals and GMO's. Checkout our Blog/Video on ORGANICs and what this means.

The Nutritional Quality and Value of FAST FOODS are extremely low as they are High in Calories, Fats, Sugars and Sodium, which can Contribute to Health issues as mentioned above.

The Production Process often involves Extensive Processing to ensure 'consistency' which includes Pre-Cooking.

Healthier FAST Food Options

When Eating in or Ordering for Take-Out at Fast Food Restaurants, consider opting for Healthier Choices by making more MINDful Selections from their Menus.

​Below is a list of Healthier Alternatives to Greasy, Fried Foods that may be available to order at Fast Food Establishments:

1. Salads with Light or No Dressing

Opt for Salads with Fresh Veggies, and Skip the Creamy Dressings.  Instead, choose a Vinaigrette or Olive Oil Dressing or, go without Dressing.

2. Veggie Grilled Options

Choose a Veggie Grilled Sandwich or Wrap instead of Meats.  They will be Lower in Fat and Calories!

3. Veggie-Based Wraps

Look for Veggie Sandwiches or Wraps that include Fresh, RAW Vegetables, Hummus, or Avocado for a more Nutritious Meal.  

4. Fruit Cups Sides

Substitute Fries with a Fruit Cup, Side Salad, or Veggie Sticks as a Side Dish.

5. Plant Based Buddha Bowls 

Some Fast Food Chains offer Customizable Bowls with a Base of Greens, Quinoa or Brown Rice, Topped with Veggies.  

6. Plant-Based Burgers

Choose a Nutritious Plant Based Burger over a Traditional Processed Meat Burger. Look for ingredients made from Whole Food Ingredients like Beans, Lentils and Veggies.

7. Soups

Choose Plant Based Vegan Soups like Carrot, Squash, Tomato over Creamy Dairy-Based Soups.  Lower in Calories and Fats, and Higher in Protein and Nutrition.

8. Gluten-Free

Ask for Gluten-Free Options in Pastas, Pizzas and Breads!  Staying away from Dairy and Wheat Based Products helps our Waste-line and our Health.  

9.  Veggie Sushi Rolls

Choose Veggie Sushi over Fish or Beef Sushi and definitely avoid Fried Tempura anything. 

10. Smoothies for Breakfast

Instead of Greasy, Fatty Breakfast Fast Food, opt for Smoothies.  They're Fast, Filling and Taste Fantastic!  

11.  GREEN Drinks / Juices

Really in a Rush and Need your Nutrition?  Choose a GREEN Drink or Juice that doesn't task your Digestive System very much, and quickly sends Nutrients directly into your Blood Stream for a Fast Energy Boost.  Check out 'GREEN is the New Black'.

TIPS for Healthier FAST Food Choices

By making these Healthier Choices, we can Enjoy a Meal out at a Fast Food Restaurant, or Enjoy a Take-Out Meal without Sacrificing our Health Goals! 

Don't be Afraid to ask for Modifications like Extra Veggies, No Cheese, Dressing or Sauce on the Side, in order to make our Meals Healthier.

Skip the Sugary Drinks, MilkShakes, Sodas, and Energy Drinks and Choose Spring Water instead.  

Watch out for 'Super Sizing'!  Opt for Smaller Portions, like Kid's Meals to Reduce Calorie Intake, regardless if the price is half to Super Size.
