Celebrating Birthdays and our Mental Health

How do we FEEL as our Birthday Approaches?  Are we Sad or Glad?

What Emotions come up when we Reflect on our Past Birthday Experiences?  Are we Happy or Unhappy? 

Do we tend to Experience Stress, Anxiety and Overwhelm surrounding Birthday Celebrations?  Or, our we Excited and Thrilled?

Is there any Meaning behind Celebrating our Birthdays, or do we just want to Ignore and Forget them?

Birthdays are more than just a Day marked on the Calendar.  They are a Celebration of Life, Growth, and the Journey we've embarked upon. 

However, amidst the Joy and Festivity, it's essential to acknowledge the Impact Birthdays can have on our Mental Health, and have Tips for Overcoming our Negative Emotions when they arise.

In this Blog, we'll explore the Mental Dynamics of Birthday Celebrations, How they affect our Mental Well-Being, and provide Practical Tips to Overcome any Negative Feelings associated with them.

Phycological Dynamics of Birthday Celebrations

Birthdays hold Significant Psychological importance, because they Serve as our Annual Reminder of our Mortality, Accomplishments, Personal Significance, and Relationships or, Lack thereof.

Many of us Dread Birthdays as they evoke Feelings of Loneliness, Sadness, Anxiety and can even Trigger Depression.

And many of us Experience the Opposite Feeling, where Birthdays bring about Feelings of Excitement, Anticipation, Joy and Happiness.

All of our Power to Feel lies in our MINDset.  How we Think, the Stories we have Created, our Perspective of Past Events and Possible Future Outcomes.  

Birthdays and the Impact on our Mental Health

Reflection on Aging:
As we grow Older, Birthdays can stir up concerns about Aging, Mortality, and Unfulfilled Goals, contributing to the Feeling of Unimportance.  It may even stimulate a Mid-Life Crisis, when we tend to question Ourselves and Our Lives.

Loneliness and Isolation:
Many People who lack Social Support, have Strained Family Relationships, and little or no Friends, can Experience Feelings of Loneliness, Isolation and Unworthiness because of the lack Meaningful Relationships and Valued Connections.

Pressure to Perform:
As Birthdays creep up on us, it can mean Party Celebrations, Family Gatherings, Going out with Friends, and even Hosting the Celebration. 

Expectations of us can run high from Gift Giving (and Receiving), to putting on a Happy Face when we are not Feeling it at all.  
Our Emotions can run all over the place and cause us to Feel Disappointment from these Expectations, that we put on Ourselves. 

Social Comparison:
Birthdays can hit home as to how far we have come in our Lives, which can prompt us to Compare Ourselves, Our Lives, what we have Accomplished and where we are in Life, with Others.

'Keeping up with the Joneses' Syndrome can lead us to Feel Inadequate and Dissatisfied because we Think, we do not Measure up to Societal Expectations or to the Achievements of others.

6 Tips to Overcome Negative Feelings Associated with Birthdays:

#1 - Manage Expectations:
Acknowledge to Ourselves that Nothing in Life is Perfect, and the most important thing we need to Focus on is EnJoying Simple Pleasures and Meaningful Relationships with our Family, Friends and Peers.  Setting Unrealistic Expectations will set us up for Failure, not Success.

#2 - Practice Gratitude:
Reflect on the Blessings and Accomplishments of the Past Year, rather than Focusing on What didn't Happen.

By Practicing Gratitude for the Lessons we have Learned, and the Relationships that we do Cherish, and What we Did Accomplish, Lightens our Emotional Negative Load.

#3  - Strained Relationships 
We cannot Control other People's Behavior, however we can Control our Thoughts, and how we Think about their Behaviour and ultimately, how we Behave towards them.

Rather than being in a State of Upset and Unrest, say a Prayer of Gratitude for these People in our Lives, for they are here to Teach us about Ourselves, Our Spiritual Journey. Thank them for Teaching us so much!   

By Flipping Our Perspective of the Strained Relationship, it will Flip our Emotions and Feelings towards them, in a Healthier, Better and more Positive way.

#4 - Self-Compassion:
​
Being Kind to Ourselves is of Utmost Importance.  We need to Acknowledge any Negative Emotions that we Feel, and do our Best to SHIFT our Thoughts to more Positive and UpLifting ones. 

Only we can Control our Thoughts and our Thoughts Control our Emotions and our Feelings.  

#5 - Reach Out for Support:
If at any time we Feel we can't do this Happy Dance on Our own, there is absolutely no Shame in Reaching out to Friends, Family, Mental Health Professionals and even a MINDset Mentor Coach!

Whenever we Dread the 'Birthday Party', Take a Walk in the Woods, Help someone in Need, or Walk a Shelter Dog. 

Our Moods will Elevate because we have Spent time Outside Ourselves and with those High Vibes Emotions, we Can Handle Blowing out the Birthday Candles on the Celebration Cake!
