What’s the Difference

NON-Dairy🥛 

Non-Dairy sounds like it means there’s No Milk … but hold on!

Many “Non-Dairy” Products still Sneak in Milk Proteins like Casein, Whey, or Lactose.

These ingredients can still cause Inflammation, Digestive Upset, and Confusion for anyone who is Vegan or RAW Vegan (RAW Plant Based.

🥛 That “Non-Dairy Creamer”? It might still have Casein (a Milk Derivative used for Texture and Whiteness).

🧀 That “Non-Dairy Cheese”? It might still include Whey Protein (a Milk By-Product added for Stretch and Meltability). 

How Do 'They' Get Away with Calling it “Non-Dairy”?

Because of Loopholes in Food Labeling Laws. Yep, it's Legal, however Very Mis-Leading.

Under U.S. and Canadian Regulations, “Non-Dairy” is Allowed to Appear on Packaging even if the Product Contains Milk-Derived Ingredients (Casein, Whey, or Lactose, as long as it doesn’t contain actual Milk Fat).

So when they say “Non-Dairy,” they mean “No Cream or Butter”, not “No Milk At All.”

😳 Crazy, right?

This Loophole was originally designed for Lactose-Intolerant people, not Plant Based or Dairy-Free Lifestyles.

So Companies Keep using it to Market to more Consumers while still Cutting Costs using Milk Derivatives.

⚠️ The RAW Truth:

Non-Dairy ≠ Dairy-Free.

Non-Dairy ≠ Plant Based.

Non-Dairy = Sneaky Labeling.

Now let’s talk about the REAL Deal: PLANT BASED

Plant Based means the ingredients come Entirely from Plants!

Meaning No Animal By-Products, No Dairy Sneak-Ins, and 100% Aligned with Vegan and RAW Vegan (RAW Plant Based) FUELstyles.

✅ NO CASEIN 

✅ NO WHEY

✅ NO LACTOSE 

✅ NO COMPROMISE

Non-Dairy Doesn’t Always Mean Dairy-Free

Here are some Products that say “Non-Dairy” - However, Contain Milk Proteins:

🔹 Coffee Creamers
Example: Coffee-Mate “Non-Dairy” Creamer

Contains: Sodium Caseinate (a Milk Derivative)

Sodium Caseinate is a Milk Protein even though the front says "Non-Dairy."

Common in both Powdered and Liquid Versions.

🔹 Non-Dairy Cheeses (watch these especially!)
Example: Some store-brand Shredded Cheeses labeled “Non-Dairy”

May Contain: Casein or Whey Protein

These are sometimes designed for Lactose-Intolerant People and not for Plant Based Foodies.

🔹 Whipped Toppings
Example: Cool Whip and similar “Non-Dairy” Whipped Toppings

Contains: Sodium Caseinate and Whey

Often used for Texture and Flavour and Definitely NOT Plant Based.

🔹 Frozen Desserts & Ice Creams
Example: Some “Non-Dairy” labeled Frozen Desserts

May Include: Caseinate or Lactose for Creaminess

Especially in Cheaper or “Reduced Sugar” options.

🔹 Protein Powders / Meal Replacements
Example: Some “Plant-Forward” or “Non-Dairy” Shakes

Still Use: Whey Protein Isolate or Milk Protein Concentrate

Always read the full ingredients even if the label claims to be “Non-Dairy” or “High-Protein.”

🔹 Instant Mashed Potatoes or Boxed Mac & Cheese
Example: Some say “Non-Dairy Topping” or “Non-Dairy Cheese”

Contain: Casein and Whey for Flavour or Texture

These are NOT safe for a Plant Based FUELstyle.

Wisdom Tip

When we see “Non-Dairy” on a Package, Flip it Over and Check for these Sneaky Dairy-Derived Ingredients:

❌ Casein / Caseinate (Milk-Derived Proteins Found in Dairy Products)

❌ Whey (Liquid By-Product of Cheese-Making)

❌ Lactose (Milk Sugar)

❌ Milk Protein Concentrate (High Protein Dairy Powder)

❌ Butterfat (the Fatty Portion of Milk)

❌ Ghee (Clarified Butter made from Milk)

❌ Rennet (Enzyme from Animal Stomachs)
