WHAT IS ORGANIC?

What is Organic?

Once upon a time, All Food was all ‘Organic’ prior to the early 1980’s.

Now, the term ‘Organic’ refers to the way Agricultural Products are Grown and Processed.

It includes a set of Practices and Principles that aim to Enhance Ecological Balance, Promote Sustainability, and Minimize Human impact on the Environment.

Specific requirements must be met and maintained in order for Products to be labeled as ‘Organic’.

NOTE: 
Organic Produce is labelled with a 5-digit code, with a leading “9” in front of the 4-digit PLU.

A 4-digit PLU represents Conventionally Grown and/or GMO (Non-Organic Certified)

So Anything other than #9 – it is NOT Organic.

Organic Crops must be Grown in Safe Soil, have No Modifications, and must remain Separate from Conventional Products.

Farmers are not allowed to use Synthetic Pesticides, Bioengineered Genes (GMO’s), Petroleum-based Fertilizers, and Sewage Sludge-based Fertilizers. 

Organic Livestock must have access to the Outdoors and must be given Organic Feed. They may not be given: Antibiotics; Growth Hormones, or any Animal-By-Products. 

WHY CONSUME ORGANIC FOOD?

Health Benefits
Organic Food is Clean, and easy to Digest because it is accepted by our Cells, so there are less Health issues.

Regulatory Standards
Organic Food Production and Sale are Highly Regulated Globally. Only Organic Produce can get the Organic Seal, proving that the Product has been Grown and Processed according to those Standards.

Nutritional Benefits
Organic Food has Higher Nutritional Value as it is Full of Antioxidants; Vitamins; Minerals; Phytonutrients; Enzymes; Coenzymes; Fiber; Protein; Carbohydrates and Fats because they come from Highly Composted, Living Soils.

Absence of Synthetic Chemicals
Organic Food is Grown without the use of Synthetic Pesticides, Herbicides, Fungicides, and Fertilizers. 

Non-GMO
Organic Products are Free from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), as Organic Farming Emphasizes Natural Growth Processes and Cycled Crops.

Taste and Quality
Organic Food Tastes Fresher and Better because there’s nothing added, like Food used to taste, Rich in Flavour and Water.

Soil Health
Organic Farming Focuses on Maintaining and Improving Soil Health, through Crop Rotations, Cover Crops, Compost, Manures, Companion Planting and Reduced Tillage.  Healthy Soil leads to Healthier Plants which leads to Healthy Food.

Conservation of Resources
Organic Farming Practices are designed to Reduce Pollution and Conserve Water and Soil by enhancing Environmental Quality and the Natural Habitat.

Environmentally Friendly
Organic Farming is Better for the Environment, as it reduces Pollution (Air, Water & Soil), Conserves Water, Reduces Soil Erosion, Increases Soil Fertility and uses Less Energy.

Wildlife Welfare
Organic Food is better for Wildlife as there are no Pesticides and/or Toxins that can Harm or Kill them.

WHY IS IT MORE EXPENSIVE?

Organic Food typically costs more than Conventionally Grown Food for several reasons, each stemming from the distinct Practices and Standards that Define Organic Farming:

Higher Labor Costs
Organic Farming is often more Labor-intensive than Conventional Farming, because of the Strict Requirements for Manual Labor to perform tasks such as Weed Control and Maintenance of Organic Compliance, which cannot rely on Synthetic Herbicides or other Chemicals frequently used in Conventional Agriculture. This higher labor input directly increases costs.

Lower Yields
Organic Farms generally Produce Less per acre compared to Conventional Farms. Without Synthetic Pesticides, Herbicides, and Fertilizers, managing Pests and Weeds, it can be more challenging and often results in Lower Yields of Crops.

Post-Harvest Handling and Processing
Organic Produce requires more Specialized, Segregated Handling and Processing to prevent mixing with Non-Organic Products and to Maintain Certification throughout the supply chain. This can require Separate Processing Facilities, or dedicated processing times, and contributes to higher processing costs.

Certification Costs
Obtaining and Maintaining Organic Certification is Costly. Farmers must Pay Certification Fees, Adhere to Stricter Regulations, and Manage Extensive Paperwork and Compliance Documentation. These costs are often passed down to the Consumer.

Crop Rotation and Diversification
Organic Farming Principles often require Practices like Crop Rotation and Crop Diversification to maintain Soil Health and Reduce Pests. These Practices can further limit the amount of high-demand crops a Farmer can produce in a given season, leading to Lower Overall Production than Conventional Methods that can Focus more extensively on a single, More Profitable Crop.

Market Demand
The Demand for Organic Food often Outpaces Supply due to its Growing Popularity and Health Benefits. This Demand can Drive Prices Higher, especially in Markets where Organic Food is less available.

Environmental and Sustainability Commitment
Organic Farming often includes a Commitment to Sustainability and Environmental Conservation, which can entail Additional Costs for Conservation Practices that are not incurred by Conventional Farms.

Given these Factors, Organic Food often carries a Premium Price, reflecting both the increased costs of Production and the value placed on Environmental Sustainability, Health, and Ethical considerations.
