A GOAL or Objective,
is an idea of the Future or Desired Result
that a person or a group of people Envision,
Plan and Commit to Achieve.
People Endeavour to reach Goals
within a Finite Time by Setting Deadlines. wikipedia
What Are S.M.A.R.T. Goals?
S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
This Method Provides a Clear Framework for Setting Goals that are Well-Defined and Attainable, paving the way for Measurable Progress and Continuous Motivation.
S is for SPECIFIC
The First Step to Achieving any Goal, is to be SPECIFIC about what we want to Accomplish. Vague Goals often Lead to Vague Results.
Instead of saying, "I want to Exercise More," be more SPECIFIC with Exactly What we Plan To Do!
Example: "I will jog for 30 minutes 3 times a week."
This Clarity will help us Focus on our Goal and make it easier to take Actionable Steps towards them.
By Breaking it Down and instead of saying "Exercise More," we must Clearly Define what we want to Accomplish and be SPECIFIC in our Words: "I jog for 30 minutes 3 times a week."
M is for Measurable
Measuring our Progress is Essential in keeping ourselves Accountable.
When Goals are Measurable, we can Track our Success and Stay Motivated.
For instance, if our Goal is to Read more, make it Measurable by Setting a Goal like: "I will read 20 pages of a book each day."
This way, we can easily Monitor our Progress, whether it’s through a Bookmark or a Reading App.
By Establishing Metrics we can Track Progress and instead of saying "Read More", we make it more Measurable with "I read 20 pages of a book each day".
A is for Achievable
While it's important to Challenge ourselves, our Goals should also be Realistic and Attainable.
Setting Goals that are too far out of reach can lead to Frustration and Burnout.
Instead of setting a Vague Goal like "I want to earn more money," we need to define an Achievable Target such as "I will earn $10,000 every month." This keeps us Motivated while pushing our Limits within reason.
By Ensuring our Goals are Realistic and within reach, they should still Challenge us and be Attainable.
Example: Instead of "Earn More Money", make it Challenging yet Achievable with "I Earn $10K every month".
R is for Relevant
Our Goals should Align with our Broader Life Objectives and Values.
Relevance ensures that our Goals are Meaningful to us and will keep us Motivated.
For example, if we're aiming for a Healthier LIFEstyle, a Relevant Goal might be "I will not drink alcohol," which ties directly into our Health Aspirations.
By Aligning our Goals to be Significant to our Overall Aspirations we can SHIFT from saying "Healthier LIFEstyle", to "I do not Drink Alcohol"
T is for Time-bound
Every Goal should have a Deadline to Create a sense of Urgency and help us Prioritize.
Rather than saying, "I’ll finish my course eventually," set a Specific Deadline, like "I will complete my online course by June 30th."
This way, we can plan our Time Effectively and Stay on Track.
By Setting a Timeframe for Achieving each Goal, meaning, instead of saying "Finish my Course", be Time Specific with "I complete my Online Course by (date)."
S.M.A.R.T. Goals help us Focus our Efforts and increase our chances of Success by Breaking Down Large Ambitions into Manageable and Measurable Actions.
They Encourage Continuous Progress and Allow us to Celebrate Small Victories along the way.
