What Does LOW FAT Really Mean?

We’ve seen those Words 'LOW FAT' on almost everything we buy in the Packaged, Canned and Boxed Aisles.   

The Thing is, IS IT REALLY LOW IN FAT?

In this Blog we're unpacking this Buzzword to Discover what 'LOW FAT' really brings to our FUELstyle Table.

⚠️ LOW-FAT ≠ HIGH-HEALTH

LOW FAT makes a Product TASTE Better and LAST Longer on Shelves, but it Doesn’t Support our Cellular Health, ENERGY, or VIBRANT Skin.

💥  Low-Fat on a Label often means that NATURAL Fats have been Removed and Replaced with:

🍬  Refined Sugars 

🧪  Artificial Thickeners 

🧫  Preservatives and Gums 

🧂   Synthetic Flavour Enhancers

We need to Understand our Food Labels. 

We need to Take Charge of our Buying POWER. 

We need to know What We are Consuming!

⚠️ Watch Out for these Words:

Low-Fat
👉 Legally means the Food has 3 grams of Fat or less per serving

⚠️ Often Replaced with Added Sugars, Thickeners, or Artificial Sweeteners

Fat-Free
👉 Contains less than 0.5 grams of Fat per serving

⚠️ Frequently packed with Flavour Enhancers, Starches, and Gums that cause Bloating

Reduced Fat
👉 At least 25% less Fat than the original version

⚠️ Doesn’t mean it’s Healthy, there's just less Fat, but often More Sugar

Light or Lite
👉 Can refer to Fat, Calories, or even Colour or Flavour (did you Read that)

⚠️ Total Marketing Loophole as it may just be Diluted with Water or Air

⚠️ Usually Ultra-Processed and Far from Nutrient-Rich

Cholesterol-Free
👉 Less than 2mg of Cholesterol & 2g of Saturated Fat

⚠️ Misleading on Plant Based Products (Plants don’t have Cholesterol)

⚠️ May still contain Hydrogenated Oils or High Sodium

Lean or Extra Lean
👉 Often found on Meat or Meat-Alternatives

⚠️ Refers to Total Fat content, but not to Additives, Sodium, or Preservatives

⚠️ Many Lean Meats = more Inflammation and are Harder to Digest

Baked Instead of Fried
👉 Marketed as a Healthier Fat Alternative

⚠️ Still loaded with refined Flours, Emulsifiers, and High-Glycemic Starches

⚠️ Can still Spike Blood Sugar and cause Belly Bloat

Skim / 1% / 2% (Dairy)
👉 Lower in Fat than whole versions

⚠️ Often Processed and Stripped of Nutrients

⚠️ Lacks Fat-Soluble Vitamins (like A, D, E, K) which means it's Harder to Absorb
