Strategies to STOP Self-Sabotage

What is Self-Sabotage?

Self-Sabotage is when we Consciously or Unconsciously Engage in Behaviors that Prevent us from Reaching our Goals.

We are knowingly, or unknowingly, setting Traps for ourselves, like Procrastination, Negative Self-Talk, or Making Excuses, to Avoid Taking Action.

These Negative and Destructive Habits can lead to a Cycle of Failure, Frustration and Staying in Status Quo.

Why Do We Self-Sabotage?

Sabotaging oneself, is a Defense Mechanism for Protecting ourselves from the Harsh Feelings we put on ourselves for Messing up, Failing, or Fumbling the Ball so to speak.  

Here are a few Common Reasons Why we are Saboteurs:

🔶Low Self-Esteem:
If we don't BELIEVE we Deserve Success, we will Sabotage our efforts to Achieve Success. 

Experiencing Low Self-Esteem can make us FEEL Unworthy of RAWmazing things, which can lead to Lack of Motivation and Self-Sabotaging Behaviours.

With Low Self-Esteem, we often Downplay Ourselves and Our Achievements, as well as, Doubt our Abilities.

🔶Comfort Zone:
Staying in our Comfort Zone is a Safe Place where we Feel in Control and at Ease.  Stepping Out of our Comfort Zone means facing Uncertainty and Potentially Failing at something we're attempting to do.

As a Result, we may Avoid this all together and therefore, Stay Stuck in our own Cycle of Self-Sabotage.

🔶Fear of Failure:
When we are Paralyzed with the Fear of Failure, the Fear of 'trying' something new, often makes us Avoid trying at all. 

The Thought of putting in a lot of Effort, only to Not Succeed, can be so Daunting that we often end up not even Starting.  And by not Starting, we Avoid the Disappointment and Pain of Potential Failure.

🔶Fear of Success:
This Fear is the Opposite to Fear of Failure!  Fear of Success can bring New Challenges and Responsibilities, which can be Intimidating to us. 

Worrying about Maintaining our Success and Facing Higher Expectations can keep us from Fully Committing, because we don't want to be a 'One Hit Wonder'! 

So when the Prospect of Handling Success seems Overwhelming, we Self-Sabotage to Stay in the Known because it FEELs Safer.

5 Strategies to Overcome Self-Sabotage

#1.  Identify Our Triggers:
​The First Step in Overcoming Self-Sabotage is Recognizing when we're doing it! 

We must Pay Attention to our Habits and our THOUGHTS!  For Example, when we FEEL Anxious or Doubtful, we must Ask ourselves what Situation makes us Procrastinate or Give Up? 

By identifying these Triggers we can SHIFT our THOUGHTS to more EmPOWERing ones, and when we do this, our FEELings Naturally SHIFT to Positive and EmPOWERing Feelings.

#2.  Practice Positive Self-Talk:
​Our Thoughts shape our Reality!

Replacing our Negative Self-Talk with Positive Self-Talk helps us Avoid Sabotaging ourselves.

We must KEEP TELLING Ourselves that WE ARE GOOD ENOUGH, Over and Over Again until we Start to BELIEVE it!

We must be our Own Champion!

And, we Must Keep Reminding ourselves of our Strengths and our Past Successes.

#3. Consume High-Nutrient Plant Based Foods:

What we FEED Our Brains Matters!

#4. Create a Simple Plan:
By Breaking down our Goals into Smaller, Manageable Steps, we can Create a Simple Plan to Achieve them.

Having a Clear RoadMap can help us Reduce our Anxiety and make it Easier to Stay Motivated and Stick to our Plan. 

Crossing off things we've Accomplished and Acknowledging our Small Victories help STOP us from our Sabotages, instead, giving us a Sense of Pride and Self-Esteem, which are the Opposite Feelings Created when we Sabotage ourselves.

#5. Seek Support:
Although we are on our own Journey, it's important to Seek Support by Talking to Friends, Family or a Coach about our Goals and Challenges.
